Simponi (Golimumab): Side Effects and Uses

In individuals, golimumab is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

In adults and children over the age of two, golimumab is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis.Golimumab is also used to treat ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults when other medications have failed to work or have been ineffective.Golimumab may also be used for reasons other than those mentioned in this article.

Golimumab is sometimes administered in conjunction with methotrexate or a glucocorticoid medication.

If you have an illness, you should not begin Simponi. Inform your doctor if you have a history of illnesses, diabetes, HIV, or a weakened immune system. You should also inform your doctor if you are presently being treated for an infection or if you have or acquire any symptoms of an infection, such as:

  • fever, sweat, or chills
  • muscle aches
  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • blood in phlegm
  • weight loss
  • warm, red, or painful skin or sores on your body
  • diarrhea or stomach pain
  • burning when you urinate or urinate more than normal
  • feel very tired

Your doctor will examine you for tuberculosis (TB)and perform a test to see if you have it. If your doctor suspects you have tuberculosis, you may be given medicine both before and during Simponi treatment. Even if your TB test findings are negative, your doctor should monitor you for this disease while you are on Simponi. Individuals who had a clear tuberculosis skin test previous to receiving Simponi developed active tuberculosis. Inform your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms while using or after using Simponi:

  • cough that does not go away
  • low grade fever
  • weight loss
  • loss of body fat and muscle (wasting)

Golimumab may induce a fatal form of lymphoma (cancer) of the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. This has mostly happened in teens and young males suffering from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Anyone who has an inflammatory autoimmune disease is at a greater risk of developing cancer. Discuss your personal danger with your specialist.

If you are expecting or intend to become pregnant, inform your doctor. If you use golimumab during pregnancy, your infant may be at risk of illness for up to 6 months. If you use golimumab while pregnant, your infant should not receive a live vaccine for at least 6 months after your last dosage.

You should not breastfeed if you are taking this medication.
